  • Soft contact lenses for high prescriptions
  • Prosthetic coloured lenses (to hide scarring & irregularities)
  • RGP (rigid gas permeable) including Orthokeratology (OrthoK)
  • Hybrid lenses (incorporating soft and RGP modalities)
  • Sclerals

*Custom lenses can also provide a level of optimization for multifocals and irregular prescriptions.

Have you been told you are not a good candidate for contact lenses?

Many patients believe or have been told that they are not a good candidate for contact lenses for a variety of reasons including high prescription (myopia progression), astigmatism, presbyopia (need for bifocals), dry eyes, corneal diseases and many more. At Focused Optometry, Dr. Lori Jaffray specializes in specialty contact lens fitting and welcomes challenging cases. Dr. Jaffray provides Calgarians with custom-fit lenses for a variety of conditions including Keratoconus, Pellucid Degeneration, Post Surgical, High Prescriptions, Multifocals, Prosthetic, and more. She is a certified fitter for Sclerals, ZenLens, OneFit, MSD, ICD, MiSight, Paragon CRT, MOONLENS, KeraSoft IC, Synergeyes, RGP’s and all Multifocals.

All contact lenses can provide a respite from wearing glasses. However, specialty contact lenses can be life-changing for many patients. For many, they provide the only method for clear vision. Patients may have been told in the past that they were not a contact lens candidate. However, Dr. Jaffray can offer expanded options. Patients who have had trauma, or surgeries like corneal transplants and corneal crosslinking, are often still able to wear contact lenses. Scarring from diseases, such as Keratoconus or Shingles (Herpes Zoster virus), or injury, does not necessarily mean that contacts are not possible. Scleral lenses can be used in the treatment of severe dry eyes as they provide a moisture barrier over the cornea. OrthoK lenses are a sub-set of RGP lenses that provide an option for myopia management for mild to moderately near-sighted patients. Even if you have dropped out of lens wear in the past, Dr. Jaffray can still discuss options with you.

In many cases, specialty contact lenses can provide better vision than the patient would get with glasses.

Specialty Contact Lens FAQ

Most specialty contact lenses are not disposable, meaning they are not meant to be replaced every day, two weeks or each month. However, they are not permanent lenses. Specialty lenses do need to be replaced, typically on either a six month or yearly schedule, depending on the type. If lenses are kept longer than their recommended lifespan, there is an increased risk of ocular health complications, poor vision due to lens degradation and warpage, and other factors. Costs of these lenses vary widely. Dr. Jaffray will discuss your options at your initial visit.

Since all contact lenses touch the surface of the eye, whether regular or specialty, they can present a risk to ocular health if not used and maintained properly. Dr. Jaffray requires all specialty lens patients to attend follow up visits every six months so that the fit of the lens, overall vision, and the health of the eyes can be monitored, and to prevent problems from arising.

Some specialty lenses require different cleaning and maintenance than regular lenses. Peroxide based cleaning solutions are recommended for better disinfection for lenses that are kept longer than a month, preservative-free saline to prevent tissue toxicity, and lens conditioners for RGPs are a few of the different types. Insertion and removal and wear schedules can also be different. The Focused Team will train all patients on these topics and can provide some additional tools for ease if there are fine mobility issues.
