Comprehensive Eye Exams
A comprehensive eye examination is a foundation for most visits to an Optometrist. It not only ensures that patients are seeing their best, but that their eye health is being monitored too. Dr. Jaffray enjoys seeing patients of all ages, whether they are new to Focused or returning. Our convenient location and parking make comprehensive examinations accessible to everyone. She is a custom contact lens fitter as well, offering expanded vision options for many patients who struggle with glasses or conventional contact lens options, as well as dry eyes.
At Focused Optometry, Dr. Jaffray incorporates modern technology into her comprehensive eye exams, including digital retinal and anterior segment photography, corneal topography, non-contact tonometry, visual fields, and ocular coherence tomography (OCT). With these, Dr. Jaffray can monitor vision changes and ocular health-related issues, as well as perform tests for drivers license requirements and police applications. Dr. Jaffray uses an electronic health records system that allows more accurate data collection and helps to prevent information from being lost.

dry eye
Our environment in Calgary is very dry, and Dr. Jaffray sees many patients with sore, red, and itchy eyes. Lubricating eye drops are one method to manage dry eyes, but ultimately, they don’t help deal with the underlying cause of the problem. Nutritional supplements in the form of Omega 3 vitamins, warm compresses with a Bruder mask combined with lid massage, maintaining proper hydration, and added humidity to your environment are all additional proactive methods to help avert the sometimes painful symptoms of dry eyes. Dr. Jaffray can provide treatment options to help. She also works in conjunction with local ophthalmologists to provide more extensive treatments where needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Having lived in Brasil in her youth, Dr. Jaffray is fluent in Portuguese. She is able to provide examinations in Portuguese, and to a more limited degree in Spanish as well. She enjoys interacting with her patients in her beloved second language.
Dr. Jaffray loves to educate all of her patients on the many aspects of their vision and eye health. She has highly trained staff including licensed opticians and optometric assistants working alongside her. Together, the Focused Team strives to ensure that all patients have an opportunity to learn while visiting the office.
Sight tests are done by licensed Opticians, but a comprehensive eye examination is performed by a Doctor of Optometry.
There are many differences between Opticians, Optometrists, and Ophthalmologists.
Licensed opticians in Alberta must complete either a 2-year apprentice-style course through NAIT, followed by a 1-year apprentice course for sight testing, or complete the new 2 year course offered at SAIT. A sight test is primarily a refractive test and opticians do not have adequate training on eye health to properly monitor most ocular health concerns.
Comprehensive eye examinations are performed by a Doctor of Optometry (Optometrist). In order to become an Optometrist, a student must first complete a 4-year undergraduate bachelor’s degree, followed by a 4-year doctorate degree in Optometry. An optometrist receives extensive training on both the visual and medical aspects of the eye. Therefore, they are able to provide examinations to evaluate not only a patient’s vision but also eye coordination and signs of ocular and systemic disease. Some diseases are first detected due to findings from a comprehensive eye examination. Optometrists in Alberta are able to diagnose, treat, and follow most eye conditions and are licensed to prescribe both topical and oral medications.
If more advanced treatment is needed (including surgical intervention), an Optometrist will refer you to an Ophthalmologist. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor that has specialized in the medical treatment of eyes, undergoing typically 10 or more years of training. Most ophthalmologists in Alberta do not perform routine comprehensive eye examinations for the purpose of prescribing contacts or glasses.
